Embracing Evolution: How Change Shapes Art and Life

I’ve found that creativity and life are deeply intertwined, like branches reaching outward from the same sturdy trunk. Over the years, my artistic practice has evolved alongside my personal journey, often reflecting the inner shifts that come with growth, change, and discovery. I used to think that artistic identity was something fixed, something you arrive at and hold onto tightly. But the more I create, the more I realise that evolution is not just inevitable — it’s essential; it's ongoing, and it's without end.

Right now, I’m immersed in creating a new collection that I hope to share with you in early 2025. It’s a body of work that combines my adoration for local landscapes, rooted in the places that hold personal meaning, with a more exploratory approach to abstraction. As with all my work, this collection is deeply tied to the Earth. But this time, I’m leaning into something new: a conscious exploration of emotional resonance across the spectrum, from joy and peace to melancholy and everything in between.

This collection feels like a reflection of my own evolution, both as an artist and as a person. And in thinking about how this journey has shaped me, I wanted to share some thoughts on the beauty of embracing change and how it can fuel not only creativity but also a fuller, richer way of being.

Trying New Methods and Developing Skills

One of the most liberating things I’ve learned as an artist is to let go of the fear of “getting it wrong.” Experimentation is a vital part of growth, and trying new techniques has often led me to unexpected discoveries that shape my work in ways I never could have planned.

For this new collection, I’ve been exploring texture and movement in ways that feel bolder, more intuitive, and more layered than before. Acrylics remain my medium of choice, but I’ve introduced new tools, techniques, and even ways of thinking about composition. Some experiments have been wildly successful; others have been learning moments that have informed what I don’t want to do again. Both are equally valuable.

In my studio, I’ve also been allowing more time for reflection — stepping back from the canvas to let the work tell me what it needs next. This has been a lesson in patience, something I’ve always struggled with. But it’s through this slower, more deliberate process that I’ve discovered subtle shifts in how I express myself through paint.

In life, as in art, trying new things can be intimidating. It asks us to step outside of what feels comfortable or familiar. But it’s only in doing so that we discover what we’re truly capable of.

The Evolution of Style and the Courage to Change

When I first began painting, I was drawn to capturing landscapes as I saw them: rolling hills, meandering rivers, and the textures of stone, moss, and bark. Over time, my focus shifted to what these places feel like rather than what they look like. This shift towards abstraction felt natural, but I admit it also felt risky.

Abstract art leaves so much open to interpretation, which can be both freeing and vulnerable. It requires a level of trust — not only in yourself but also in the viewer — to find their own connection to the work. For me, this shift wasn’t just about artistic style; it was about letting go of the need to control how others perceive my work and instead focusing on creating something honest and resonant.

This new collection builds on that philosophy, merging the real and the abstract in a way that feels true to where I am right now. It’s a reminder to myself that it’s okay — necessary, even — to change. That what we create, like who we are, is never meant to stay static.

Connection to the Earth and Emotional Resonance

My connection to nature has always been at the heart of my art. The landscapes I paint are often places I walk, reflect, and find grounding. They’re more than just scenery — they’re spaces that hold memory, energy, and a deep sense of belonging.

In this new collection, I’m exploring how these landscapes connect to our emotional worlds. How the softness of a morning mist might evoke a sense of stillness, or how the boldness of a stormy sky might resonate with the more turbulent aspects of our inner lives.

Emotion, like nature, is cyclical and dynamic. There’s no good or bad — it’s all part of a larger whole. I want this collection to capture that spectrum, to remind us that just as the Earth moves through seasons and the moon moves through phases, so too do we. And that every part of that process, every emotion, has value.

Embracing Change in Life and Art

For a time, I felt hesitant about allowing my art to change too much. There’s a pressure, especially as a professional artist, to establish a signature style and stick to it. But the more I’ve leaned into my truth, the more I’ve realised that this expectation doesn’t serve me.

Art, for me, is a deeply personal expression of where I am at any given moment. To limit that would be to deny myself the full experience of growth. And the truth is, none of us stay the same. We’re constantly evolving, shaped by new experiences, perspectives, and insights.

It’s easy to feel shame or uncertainty about change, whether in our art, careers, or personal lives. But I believe that embracing evolution is one of the most freeing things we can do. It allows us to let go of what no longer serves us and make space for something new, something richer.

This belief extends far beyond the studio. In life, as in art, there’s a beauty in allowing ourselves to grow, even if it means letting go of what once felt certain.

A New Chapter

As I continue to work on this collection, I’m reminded daily of the importance of staying open — to change, to experimentation, and to the full spectrum of emotion that makes us human.

Each piece in this collection feels like a step forward, a reflection of my journey and a celebration of what’s to come. It’s rooted in the Earth, but it also carries a deeper resonance — one that speaks to the courage it takes to evolve, to explore, and to embrace the unknown.

I hope that when this collection is ready to share, it resonates with you in some way. Whether it stirs a memory, an emotion, or simply a moment of stillness, my hope is that it reminds you of the beauty in your own journey.

Thank you for being here, for supporting my work, and for sharing in this process with me. Change is never easy, but it’s always worth it. And I’m so grateful to be able to share this chapter with you.
